There were reports that the credit crunch could have effects on the planning of the Rugby World Cup. There were also articles scattered all over the internet stating that the crisis could become worse over time and might end up hitting not only sports clubs but also New Zealand who will be hosting the Rugby World Cup.
Rugby New Zealand 2011 CEO Martin Snedden in an interview with Reuters though, expressed his thoughts about the whole thing differently. He did say that he is not sure about the effects of the crisis to the Rugby World Cup yet and that they won’t know for sure until they start selling the tickets later this year.
When asked about the five of the 13 venues hosting matches that will be undergoing some reconstruction, Snedden said that he has no doubts that the stadia will be completed. He also said that all of the funding for each of the venues has been secured and guaranteed by central and local government and that all the funding was sourced internally.
With the Rugby New Zealand 2011 CEO assuring that himself, I could only conclude that New Zealand government could already have anticipated the problem and could have already thought of ways to avoid the effects of the global crisis. The Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in 2011 will carry on as planned.
