When I was asked to write about Super 14 rugby I was quite excited because I don’t know anything about, so to do a bit of research and share my views on the sport really excites me. Super 14 Rugby is the biggest rugby union championship and it takes place only in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are four teams from Australia to bet on rugby, they all have their proper name but they also all have a nickname, in Australia we have Queensland (Reds), New South Wales (Waratahs), ACT (Brumbies) and finally Western Australia (Force). Then we have an extra team in New Zealand giving us a total of five teams, Auckland(Blues), Waikato (Chiefs), Wellington(Hurricanes), Canterbury(Crusaders), and finally Otago(Highlanders). Finally we have another five teams from South Africa, Free State(Cheetahs), Western Cape(Stormers), Kwazulu Natal(Sharks), Gauteng(Lions) and to finish off Northern Gauteng(Bulls).

Every team will play each other once throughout the season and the teams collate points like in most league tables, points are gained by winning a match and by drawing a match, 4 points for winning and two for drawing. What I really like is that bonus points are awarded throughout the season too!!!…..you get 1 bonus point for scoring 4 or more tries in a match and even if you lose a game but not by more than 7 points, you get an extra bonus point, how good is that, what I really like is that the losing team has the potential of winning more bonus points.

The top four teams after the fourteen then go into a knockout tournament between themselves to determine the overall winner for the season so the odds for rugby should be interesting this season.

The name of the tournament, the Tri Nations Rugby gives a little clue as to what it’s all about. It is an international rugby union series with three nations competing. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa all compete against one another in a series of matches both home and away.

It is structured to find the winner using a points system. A team will get 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 0 for a loss. Teams also have the opportunity to earn bonus points in matches which will then be added to their points from the outcome of the match. The current top try scorer is Christian Cullen from the All Blacks with 16.

The Tri Nations began in 1996 and has always had these three nations competing and opportunities to bet on rugby. The tournament is structured in such a way that each of the three teams play each other twice (on a home and away basis), with the winner being decided based on the number of points collated over the course of the competition. Australia and South Africa have won just two Tri Nations competitions each but the dominance of the All Blacks has been well and truly reinstated with victories in the last four competitions. Of the fifty six games played in the Tri Nations, New Zealand have scored the most points (1512) and conceded the fewest (1089), racking up a total of 183 points with their 39 victories. The 2009 Tri Nations kicks off on July 18th with New Zealand facing arch rivals Australia in the opening game. Eight games later on September 19th, the two teams will play each other again to bring the competition to a close. Fans will be looking forward to some outstanding rugby and one thing is for sure, we will definitely witness the best of Southern Hemisphere rugby!

The Rugby World Cup is the prestigious international rugby union competition being hosted in 2011 by New Zealand. Rugby Union is a popular sport in New Zealand and one of the reasons why this nation was favoured over Japan, who also wanted to host the 2011 tournament.

It was agreed that New Zealand would host the Rugby World Cup back in 2005, giving opportunity for any stadium upgrades or new builds to get underway so that they are ready in time. The IRB (International Rugby Board) states that the final of the tournament must be held in a stadium that has a 60,000 minimum capacity.

The Rugby World Cup final will be held at Eden Park in Auckland on the 23rd October 2011 and reconstruction work has already started here to ensure that this capacity amount is reached because presently, the stadium can hold 47,500 spectators for rugby matches. The semi-final matches will also be held in Auckland but there are other venues in place to hold some of the other matches.

The Carisbrook Stadium in Dunedin City will be one of these other venues that will host some matches and Dunedin City Council has given the go ahead for a brand new stadium to be built ready for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. It is anybody’s guess as to whether New Zealand will actually be ready for the largest sporting event ever to be held in the country but with all the plans underway, I don’t honestly think they will let us down.
