Rugby is a massive sport that is played and supported all over the world. There are some countries that Rugby means more to than others, one of them countries has got to be New Zealand.

New Zealand always have, and always will be one of the biggest and best countries in the sport, whether it be the players performance on the pitch, the fans support from the stands, the coverage from the media, the whole country are so passionate about the sport.

The New Zealand All Blacks are probably the most famous team in the world, their all Black kit stands out from the rest, their on field performances leave others drooling and then of course there is the infamous Haka Dance that they perform before each match to try and intimidate their opponents.

Rugby Union is actually seen as the national sport of the country and considering that they have a winning record against every national team in the sport, you can certainly not blame them for saying this.

There is a competition every year called the Tri-Nations which is where New Zealand, South Africa and Australia compete against each other with the aim to be the overall winner, obviously. It has only been going for 13 years and New Zealand have walked away winner on no fewer than 9 times, which is fantastic in anyone’s eyes.

Six Nations: At the start of every calendar, fans of Rugby Union get excited at the RBS 6 Nations (The RBS stands for Royal Bank of Scotland who sponsor the competition).

The 6 Nations is an annual competition and is contested of 6 European sides, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy. (Italy only joined in 2000 and the competition was previously known as the 5 nations, surprisingly enough).

The winners of the 6 nations are then seen to be European Champions, just like in football when the European Championships are played (except that is every four years).

This year saw Ireland claim the championship and in fact was the first time in an incredible 61 years and they did so in very impressive style by beating every team they played against.

Every team in the competition play each other once, you might think it is unfair that sometimes a team will have home advantage but this then changes the following year, so for example if England are home to Wales next year, then Wales will be at home the following year.

Every nation have their own magnificent stadium to play their home games and these stadiums have seen some of the greatest matches in the competitions history. England play their home games at Twickenham in London, Wales play at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, Scotland host their opponents from Murrayfield in Edinburgh and the Irish defend themselves at Croke Park in Dublin.

Across the waters in France they play at the Stade de France (like the football team do) and finally the Italians play at Stadio Flaminio in Rome.

Bringing together four Australian teams, five teams from New Zealand and five South African sides, each of these teams play each other once across a 14 week period to battle it out to become Super 14 Champions. The tournament consists of a round robin stage as well as two semi finals and a final. During the round robin stage, each team is awarded four points for a win, two points for a draw and are awarded bonus points for scoring four or more tries in a game and for losing by seven points or fewer. Once each of the teams have played each other once in the round robin stage, the top four teams proceed to the semi final stage before the two finalists play each other at the home ground of the highest seeded team.

An additional game is also played to decide third and fourth place when the losing semi-finalists go head to head to salvage some pride! The current champions are the South African side, the Vodacom Bulls, who were crowned champions after beating the New Zealand team, the Waikato Chiefs. New Zealand is the most successful nation in this tournament with ten victories followed by Australia and South Africa each notching up two victories each. The most successful team since the tournament was introduced is the New Zealand team, the Canterbury Crusaders who have won six Championships and they will be looking to make that a lucky seven once the tournament kicks off again in February 2010.

Although the likes of football and Horse Racing dominate the bank accounts of most online bookmakers, there are still an awful lot of other sports available to bet, some of which might seem a little strange such as the likes of Handball and Water Polo, but then of course there are the more famous sports too such as Cricket and Rugby.

Rugby is a sport that has so many different games to it, for starters there is Rugby Union and Rugby League but then there are different competitions mixed between the two, some of which can slightly confuse people, for example there can be a competition where England have a team but then there is another competition where Great Britain have a team, now I suppose none of this really matters in this scenario because the important thing is that you can place a bet on the sport if you want to.

Just like Football and Horse Racing, Rugby is available to bet on on many different websites, and I think I will use Betfred as a prime example on how you can bet on rugby. To start with, simply log on to www.betfred.com. Then you pick the sports tab and scroll down to find either Rugby or Rugby Union (depending on what you’re betting on) For this example I shall use Rugby Union, and the odds that it has brought up are based on who I think will be the outright winners of the 2011 World Cup, despite being two years away there are some very short (and long odds) available.

The Rugby World Cup is the ultimate rugby union tournament which is contested every four years between the World’s finest rugby playing countries.

The Rugby World Cup, also known as the William Webb Ellis Cup was first contested in 1987 and was jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia. New Zealand went on to win the inaugural tournament setting a trend of southern hemisphere domination underway.

Of the six tournaments that have been held so far, only one Northern Hemisphere team have won the crown when England beat Australia with a last minute drop goal from Jonny Wilkinson. The Australian rugby team are currently the most successful team in this tournament as a result of their two victories in 1991 and 1999. After beating England 15-6 in Paris back in 2007, South Africa are the current world champions and they will be looking to retain their crown when the next rugby world cup finals kick off in New Zealand in 2011.

While this tournament is expected to cost in excess of $310m, ticket sales are expected to exceed $280m, making it the single biggest sporting event to have taken part in New Zealand. The tournament itself is split into two distinct stages; the group stage and the knock out stage. The group stages see the allocated pools play against each other in a points based league. The knockout stages then see the top two teams from each pool compete through the quarters, semis and the final with the aim of becoming the best rugby team in the world.

The Tri Nations rugby union series is an annual competition that is held between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Within this competition, each of the three participating countries play each other three times with four points awarded to the winner of each fixture, two points awarded to both teams for a draw and no points awarded for any team suffering a defeat. As well as the standard points system, there are a maximum of two bonus points available to any team who scores more than four tries in one game or avoids defeat by fewer than seven points. At the end of the tournament, the team with the most points is declared the Tri Nations Champions.

The first Tri Nations tournament took place in 1996 and was dominated by the All Blacks who survived the tournament without conceding any points along the way. New Zealand remains the most successful nation in this tournament with a total of nine championships with both Australia and South Africa notching up two titles each. In their Tri Nations history, the New Zealanders have won 39 of their 56 matches, drawn none and lost just 17.

They have scored an impressive 1512 points and are the only team to have a positive points difference of 423, after conceding just 1089 points. Australia and South Africa both have negative points differences of 129 and 333 respectively outlining the All Black’s domination of this tournament. It is therefore unsurprising to learn that the top two all time points scorers are both New Zealanders (Mehrtens and Carter) as are the top three all time try scorers (Cullen, Howlett and Rokocoko). The 2009 Tri Nations kicks off on July 18th and New Zealand will be looking to take the championship tally into double figures. Australia and South Africa will have their work cut out to stop them.

There are a number of honours to be won within the 6 Nations including the ‘Grand Slam’ which is achieved by the team who gains the most victories over every nation that they play and the ‘Wooden Spoon’ which is bestowed upon the team who is unlucky enough to finish at the bottom of the league. The 6 Nations is a unique tournament in that there are a total of seven trophies up for grabs. The Championship Trophy goes to the overall winner of the league. The Triple Crown trophy is won by the home nation who scores a win against the three remaining home nations.

The remaining trophies are contested as part of fixtures between two nations such as The Calcutta Cup which is played between England and Scotland, The Centenary Quaich which is played between Scotland and Ireland as well as The Millennium Trophy where England and Ireland go head to head. Since the start of this tournament, England have notched up the most Home Nations and Six Nations victories closely followed by Wales. The next RBS 6 Nations will see Ireland defend their Championship Crown against their five arch rivals and it promises to provide action galore.

The British Lions rugby tour of the World Champions South Africa is becoming more and more interesting by the day even before the team has even left the sores of Britain with players dropping out of the squad left right and centre due to either injury or suspension leaving the squad now wondering who will be next to drop out?

After naming what looked like a beast of a squad at the beginning of the month to try and tackle the springboks at their own psychical game tour manager Gerald Davis must now have his fingers crossed that the players involved in the Leicester V Leinster European Cup Final clash do not get injured or suspended because that 1st massive test match n South Africa on June 20th is now not long away.

One thing Lions head coach Ian McGeechan will have to do now again though is look for another replacement as Irish hooker Jerry Flannery who I thought was playing very well indeed has torn ligaments in his left elbow which rule him out of the Lions 10-match tour of South Africa which must be heart breaking news for the rugby player after having such a fine season for club and country.

Another Irish player who will not be going on tour for very different reasons is the giant flanker Alan Quinlan who after clearly gouging at a opponents eyes in last weekend’s semi final defeat to fellow Irish outfit Leinster and was given a 12 week suspension which after appealing still stands so Leicester’s Tom Croft will now be joining up with the squad if he don’t get injured in the final this weekend.

CoralCoUk news shows the biggest European Club cup in the northern hemisphere was played between the Irish side of Leinster who were debutants in a final of such calibre and the English side of Leicester who were a very experienced side in these sort of events with many trophies inside their cabinet.

The final itself promised so much and with a capacity crowd crammed into Scotland’s Murrayfield stadium and thousands in the pubs of Leinster and Leicester it was set up to be a classic but the truth is it was anything but and if it was not a final I would have turned the television off way before half time.

One thing that did make the game reasonably interesting was the score line because during the whole game there was only a try score in it and this may have been the reason why nobody seemed to take the game by the scruff of the neck but due to the size of the game it was pretty understandable. Sometimes It’s not the fluidity and skill of the rugby which gets my heart pumping these days it’s the fact that here we had two sides that both had a chance to pinch victory all the way to the final whistle.

The game itself was a typical tactical affair with no teams giving the other an inch to play decent flowing Rugby and going into the final ten minutes the teams were locked together at 16 each until Leicester committed a penalty and Sexton stroked the match winning penalty between the posts after earlier scoring a massive drop goal which was worth man of the match on itself.

Leinster celebrated their first Heineken Cup success when the referee brought an end to the game with a fully deserved 19-16 score line to send the Irish in the crowd crazy and I am sure the tills around the ground at all the local pubs benefitted as well.

Rugby is one of the most popular sports in New Zealand with New Zealand Rugby roots stretching way back to 1870. The National team, known as the All Blacks, are considered to be one of the best Rugby Union teams despite only being crowned as World Champions once in 1987.

New Zealand has a strong domestic rugby union scene with a series of popular competitions played each year. The Air New Zealand Cup began in 2006 and quickly became the premier competition which was contested by 14 of New Zealand’s professional first division clubs. The Heartland Championship is an equivalent amateur competition which features 12 teams from the second and third divisions.

While the domestic competitions have important roots in New Zealand, it is the International competitions that are most popular amongst the masses. The Rugby World Cup is the ultimate competition with the All Blacks winning the first ever competition back in 1987. The All Blacks have never won the competition again despite reaching the semi finals in 2003 and the quarter finals in 2007.

However, the All Blacks will be looking forward to trying to win the 2011 World Cup when they host the competition for the first time since co-hosting the inaugural tournament in 1987. As well as the World Cup, New Zealand also participates in the Tri Nations competition alongside Australia and South Africa, a competition that they have dominated since its inception in 1996. One thing is for sure, the All Blacks will be looking to continue this form and domination when the William Webb Ellis Cup comes to the shores of New Zealand.
