The 2009 Tri Nations is fast approaching, taking place throughout July, August and September. In this event, Australia is more commonly known as the Wallabies and New Zealand are the All Blacks. Since 1996 to 2008, New Zealand has been the more successful Rugby Union team in this event winning the trophy nine times in this period. Australia has managed it just twice. The other team within the Tri Nations is South Africa also known as the Springboks. During this competition, the teams play in home and away fixtures.

The other tournament where these two teams meet is in the Rugby World Cup. This is a prestigious Rugby Union competition and the next World Cup will be actually played in New Zealand too. Both Australia and New Zealand qualified for the World Cup after finishing in the top three of the 2007 World Cup. For the 2011 competition, New Zealand is playing in Pool A and Australia in Pool C so the two teams could potentially meet in the final.

Looking at head to head matches between New Zealand and Australia, New Zealand have been victorious a staggering 85 times compared to Australia’s 39 wins. The two teams have only drawn five times. So what will be the outcome of the next match between these two great Rugby Union sides?

The Rugby World Cup is played every four years and brings together the World’s best rugby union sides. Organised by the International Rugby Board (IRB), the Rugby World Cup was first played in 1987 and is named after the pupil who supposedly invented Rugby after picking up the ball during a game of football, William Webb Ellis.

The last Rugby World Cup was played in France in 2007 when current World Champions, South Africa, beat England 15-6. England went into the final as defending World Champions after they beat Australia (the most successful team in the tournament) in 2003 with a last gasp drop goal by Jonny Wilkinson. The feat of retaining the Cup was one step too far for England who were overpowered by the Springboks. The tournament lasts for around a month with twenty teams taking part, all of which are split into four pools.

The group stage of the tournament sees each nation play their pool opponents once with the top two teams progressing to the knockout stage of the tournament. This stage consists of four quarter finals, two semi finals and the final. While the games that occur in the group stage of the competition can finish in a draw, they obviously cannot happen in the knockout stage and so should any of these games finish all square, extra time is played followed by sudden death. If the two sides still cannot be separated, a kicking competition is used to decide the Champions, although this has not yet happened in this competition.
